Junior Hackathon, a feast combining code and culture, will take place at Helsinki City Museum on April 22 at 11 am to 5 pm. At the event museums, companies and NGOs turn cultural heritage into digital creations. Old pictures, treasures from sound archives, or familiar passages from TV are tinkered, scratched, remixed and mashed up by kids of 7 to 15 years.

The event is organized by Open Knowledge Finland / AvoinGLAM ja it is supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Participate in the hackathon
Are you 7 to 15 years and interested in digital making? Sign up in the hackathon by April 16! Make a small app or an animation, a picture series or an experiment together in a team where all work together. The work is guided by a dedicated mentor and advice from all workshops is available for the participants. At the end of the day, the projects are presented and awarded!

Come and see what happens at the museum and join one of the workshops! You can sign up only on the day of the workshop on location.
Remixing sound archives with Sonic Pi
In this workshops the participants will code an own musical piece or a soundscape using Yle Sound Archive samples from mooing cows to the sounds of banging prison doors. Sonic Pi is an open source programming environment to code music and sounds live.
Cryptoparty
This workshop familiarizes the participants with online security. We test the boundaries of privacy and learn to protect privacy online. The workshop will feature the box of secrets, test what can be shared with whom and see what traces surfing the internet leaves.
Images of Helsinki
Helsinkikuvia.fi features thousands of openly licensed high resolution images from Helsinki City Museum. They will be used to illustrate Wikipedia, rephotography safaris will take participants out, and images will be printed and clipped to populate the smart miniature city.
360 degrees
We will use 360 cameras to document the event and the surroundings of the museum, and bring the images into AR and VR environments.
Videoremix
Reporters will report the events of the day on video, and the collective loop will evolve over the day.

Smart stadi
Let’s build together a smart miniature Helsinki! The digital city will have paper houses, roads and residents. We will sense the life of the city and make it live inside our city.
Toddlers’ corner
There’s something for the smaller, too. They will be assistant architects by colouring and clipping images and plans of Helsinki buildings. When there is need for change, one can play programming!
